The first Ilfracombe Victorian celebrations took place from the 4th -11th June 1987.
It was started through a partnership of Ilfracombe college with Mr and Mrs A Bacon and John Bell and Ilfracombe Tourism Association.
The second week in June was chosen because it was the hotelier's quietest week. As Rita Clews aka Queen Victoria puts it was to get bums in beds.
Almost all organisations were included with the majority of the town dressing up and dressing their shops and businesses. John Bell took to horseback ringing a bell and announcing events happening around the town.
The suffragettes' marches were added by the ladies of the college in following years.
The programme was developed and extended over the years, arriving at our 31st year, now getting bigger and better than ever, attracting many new visitors to our town.
From the 1870's writings of Jules Verne to Disney's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, .
Steampunk has been around as long as the Victorians themselves, even if they weren't called Steampunk.
It's all about mixing the old with the new, fusing modern technology with the design & philosophy of the Victorian era.
In 2012 the opening ceremony of the Britsh Olympics was Steampunk based, which I think is where the sudden surge came from, lts though it has been simmering away, for 200 hundred years.
And yet again the Ilfracombe Victorians are embracing the Steampunk culture more than ever.
